How much does it cost to bleep out words on television or the radio? (Any other sources as well)?

Shon Almquist: Omitting words from movies and television costs money. The cost is arrived at by how much it costs to rent a post production sound facility and pay someone do delete - or bleep out the words. Of course, the number of words bleeped out determine the cost. A movie or TV show that has one or two words removed will cost less than a show with a lot of swearing in it.Sometimes bad words are "Over-dubbed" which means they pay the actor to record his or her voice over bad words. For example, when you see a movie in a theater, it is uncensored, but if the producers want to release the movie for TV they will over-dub (record over) a bad word with one that is OK, so on TV instead of hearing goddam it, you'll hear gosh darn it.The same process is used for songs on the radio. With books, typically books are free from censorship, but if a company wanted to make a book more suitable for a younger audience, the publisher would have to pay an editor to read through the book ! and edit the passages and replace bad words. Again this is a labor cost and depends on how long it takes to make the edits and may include the cost of re-publishing the boo for the younger audience. As to unit costs, some sound studios have a minimum set up charrge and then after that it's labor and materails costs. It might coust several thousand dollars (US) to bleep out words, and much, much more for overdubbing voices - tens of thousands of dollars depending on who the actors are.A good print editor may charge 50 dollars (US) or more depending on what needs to be editied....Show more
