Cliff Tyre: I usually make a Dutch Apple....if you prefer a top crust you can use this same recipe and instead of the crumb topping...just add the top crust. The filling would be the same.I first used this recipe when I was a newly wed living on a farm in Iowa, 50 years ago. I have made it many many times since then....last week being the latest.DUTCH APPLE PIEoven temp. 425°F1/2 cup sugar3 TBS flour1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg1/4 tsp. gound cinnamondash of salt5 cups thinly sliced pared tart apples. (about 5 med.)Prepare pastry. Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt.Stir in apples. Turn into pastry lined pie plate. Top with crumb topping. Bake 40-50 minutes.
