Iris Shawcroft: I got stationed at Hickam AFB in Hawai`i in the late 70s, fell in love with it, and stayed after I got out. My tips for a serviceman...- Don't trap yourself on base. Even if you're required to live there, get off base as much as you can. It's very easy to fall into the trap of spending all your time on base with people who hate 'living on the rock'.- Learn to surf, boogieboard, snorkel, scuba dive, sail, and/or windsurf. It's one of the best places in the world to do all of those things and yo! u might not get a better chance in this life.- Explore the local food. Food is a huge part of the Hawaiian culture and the mixture of all different ethnic cuisines means you'll never have to eat at McWendyKing's Box. Go to Zippy's. Find a plate lunch wagon nearby.- Watch the surf contests on the North Shore in the winter. Sitting on the beach when Pipeline is raging 30 yards away is something you'll never forget. If you hear the Eddie Aikau is underway do whatever you have to to get to Waimea Bay!- Go hiking. There are some amazing trails.- Get into the local music scene. Hawaiian music in general, and slack key in particular, is great to listen to. More importantly, it's very accessible. You can plop down at a small bar in Waikiki and for the price of an (expensive) beer listen to Led Ka`apana play. The tourists sitting around you have no idea that this is like wandering into a pub in Ireland and finding Van Morrison performing.Mostly - keep an open mind and have! the time of your life!...Show more
