Tawny Grosskreutz: IN GENERAL1) It's not made with salt2) It doesn't taste saltyHOWEVERSome water isn't ideal for making pale, hoppy beer, it's too low on the suplhates needed to bring out the hoppy taste to the full.So they do add mineral salts, not table salt, to produce a harder water that is more suitable (the process is called Burtonisation)This would be more likely to give the beer a taste/smell of sulphur than salt, as the salts that are added are mainly sulphates. You will also find that if a brewer moves brewery, and is on a different water supply, they will try to match the salts in the water to the original source to match taste. This still does not produce a salty taste though....Show more
Lyman Gauld: No. Real beer is made with water, hops, yeast, and malt. Salt would inhibit the growth of yeast, something you don't want.
Leontine Kreitz: No,its made with hops, what you have experienced is obviously polluted in some way.Probably with some kind of cle! aning fluid, even ordinary washing up iquid can taint the taste of beer and must be kept well away and never used on any beer making equipment
Blaine Connett: First it depends on what you think when you say salt. Sodium Chloride or table salt is one of MANY chemical salts. In brewing water chemistry is important. That is the yeast are living things and like mammals need minerals for strong teeth and bones ( its more like string branches, but you get the idea). It greatly depends on water but home brewers sometimes add these salts to help brewing. They are generally int he form of calcium and magnesium salts, not sodium salts (yes Epsom salt is one of them). However these salts are added to change chemistry not taste. That is to say if someone used table salt it would be in such small qualities as to hardly be tasted in the finished product. As for beers salty taste is is again from those minerals suspend in water and their overall taste after brewing. Finding hid! den tastes in alcohol has a very long, nearly nauseating, hist! ory. Is there chocolate in wine? no, not unless you added coco beans. Is there vanilla in wine? no, not unless you added it on purpose. Is there blue cheese in beer? God I hope not, cheese is fermented with bacteria. Is there fruity bubble gum in the beer? Gee what do you think?I can list about 1000 things people detect "hints" of. Even really disgusting things like "old socks" (yes in French on a very expensive bottle of wine). So who is to contradict you if you think it tastes like table salt was added....Show more
Jannette Kotz: Not to me. Maybe where you go they don't wash and rinse the lines properly.
